About the position

The Grand Rapids Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and passionate Secondary Teacher for Spanish and Social Studies at GR Public Museum High School. This position is crucial in ensuring that every student is academically and socially prepared for college or career paths. The teacher will be responsible for equipping students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and motivation to become confident, critical thinkers who can contribute positively to a changing global community. The role involves providing a variety of learning experiences tailored to meet the individual needs of students as defined by their educational plans. The teacher will report directly to the assigned building/program principal and will be expected to perform essential job functions satisfactorily, with reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities. The essential functions of this role include providing effective instruction across various academic areas, utilizing the Danielson Rubric, and differentiating instruction to cater to the diverse needs of all students. The teacher will be responsible for teaching the required curriculum, administering common assessments, and maintaining ongoing student progress. Additionally, the teacher will develop detailed lesson plans, implement best classroom management practices, and collaborate with special education staff to support students with individualized education programs (IEPs). Engaging with parents and the community is also a vital aspect of this role, as the teacher will maintain regular communication regarding student progress and participate in parent meetings. The teacher will also contribute to the school community by serving as a role model, participating in professional development, and engaging in extracurricular activities. Regular attendance and compliance with state, federal, and district policies are essential for this position. The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree, a current Michigan teaching certification, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse environment. This role is not only about imparting knowledge but also about fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student growth and development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective instruction in various academic areas using the Danielson Rubric.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students.
  • Teach the required curriculum and administer common assessments.
  • Maintain and monitor ongoing student progress effectively.
  • Provide instruction and interventions in behavioral areas.
  • Develop detailed lesson plans for each subject area.
  • Plan and provide appropriate educational supplemental activities.
  • Utilize best classroom management practices to create a conducive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with special education staff to provide IEP accommodations.
  • Participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of behavior management strategies.
  • Engage with parents through regular communication about student progress.
  • Participate in parent meetings, including IEPs and Parent/Teacher Conferences.
  • Contribute to community service and global citizenship goals.
  • Serve as a role model for students and the school community.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Contribute to extracurricular activities such as clubs and academic competitions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field.
  • Current appropriate Michigan teaching certification.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current research on child learning.
  • Ability to motivate students to perform at their best.
  • Experience working in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both orally and in writing.
