About the position

The Teacher for Special Education/Life Skills at Espanola Public Schools is responsible for providing individualized education programs (IEPs) to students with special needs. The role aims to help each student reach their fullest potential in various aspects of their development, including physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral growth. The teacher will collaborate with other staff, parents, and professionals to ensure the effective implementation of educational plans and support for students.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the IEP for students on caseload, including completing reevaluation packets and identifying present levels of performance.
  • Conduct Annual IEPs by due date.
  • Complete and submit Re-evaluation packets a minimum of 60 days before the evaluation due date.
  • Schedule and conduct EDT meetings within the given timeline.
  • Work collaboratively with ancillary and diagnostic staff to implement the IEP.
  • Provide a basic care program for educable students consistent with State education code requirements.
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have Special Education students in regular classes.
  • Confer frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the student's wellness and progress.
  • Assist other professional staff members in resolving unique psychological learning or disciplinary problems of each student.
  • Assist in screening, evaluating, and recommending placements of applicants in the school's Special Education Program.
  • Assist Special Education students in making realistic assessments of their abilities and establishing educational and occupational goals.
  • Provide motivation to students who have a short attention span.
  • Establish and maintain standards of individual student behavior.
  • Keep attendance records and all other records pertinent to student activities.
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  • Implement EPSS and participate in curriculum development programs and revisions.
  • Gather data to develop strategies for student improvement.
  • Initiate the selection of equipment and materials and maintain required inventory records.
  • Supervise pupils in and out of school activities as assigned.
  • Administer Group Standardized Tests in accordance with district testing program.
  • Administer the Language Assessment Scale Testing and Scoring in both English and Spanish.
  • Participate in filling out Time Study for Medicaid reimbursement.
  • Attend Board meetings at the request of the Superintendent or authorized designee.
  • Arrange and attend field trips.
  • Accompany students to bathrooms and assist with toileting as needed.
  • Rearrange classroom to accommodate student learning activities.
  • Transfer and/or relocate student working files.

Requirements

  • Properly certified in all areas of assignment.
  • Demonstrate cooperativeness and a willingness to carry out assigned tasks and performance responsibilities.
  • Bilingual Endorsed is highly preferable.
  • Other qualifications determined necessary by the Board.
