About the position

The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is seeking passionate and dedicated educators for the 2024-25 school year to work in a Special Day Class (SDC) for students with mild to moderate disabilities at Skyline High School. This position is part of a broader mission to create joyful, healing, and liberatory learning environments for Oakland's diverse student population. As a Special Education teacher, you will play a crucial role in building and maintaining caring relationships with students and their families, which is foundational to effective teaching. Responsibilities

  • Teach and support students with mild to moderate disabilities in a Special Day Class setting.
  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for students.
  • Build and maintain caring relationships with students and families.
  • Maintain high expectations for all students through an asset-based lens.
  • Collaborate with other educators and staff to create inclusive learning environments.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
  • Engage in Professional Learning Communities to share best practices and resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Eligibility for employment in the US and ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Possession or willingness to earn a California teaching credential authorizing instruction in core curriculum.
  • Completed online application, resume, and cover letter.
  • Two current professional references, including one from a supervisor.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or commitment to weekly testing upon request.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Bilingual skills in English and another language.
  • Familiarity with special education laws and regulations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing IEPs.
