About the position

The position involves working as a correctional educator, focusing on preparing individuals for successful reentry into communities by implementing educational programs in various subjects. The role emphasizes maintaining a secure environment while fostering a humane approach to education, ensuring that students with special learning needs receive tailored support and instruction.

Responsibilities

• Implement the overall remedial reading, language arts, science, social studies, and/or math curriculums.
• Maintain life skills, study strategies, and cognitive strategy programs.
• Design new programs to meet special needs and place students into prescribed programs.
• Interview and evaluate prospective special learning needs students.
• Administer individualized formal and informal diagnostic special education and literacy tests.
• Maintain and evaluate accurate records of student progress and redesign programs as necessary.
• Collaborate with other correctional institution employees to maintain security.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with supervised student teaching.
• At least one course in general psychology, human development, history/philosophy of education, and teaching methods.
• At least 24 semester hours in special education, including courses on teaching exceptional students.
• Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in designing and implementing lessons and curricula based on assessment data.
• Experience in developing and analyzing diagnostic special education and literacy tests.
• Knowledge of prescriptive teaching techniques and accommodation strategies.
