About the position

The position involves preparing individuals for successful reentry into communities by implementing educational programs in a correctional setting. The role focuses on fostering a humane and secure environment while ensuring public safety through the development of good neighbors. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and maintaining curricula, evaluating students' needs, and ensuring their progress in various subjects.

Responsibilities

  • Implement overall remedial reading, language arts, science, social studies, and/or math curriculums.
  • Maintain life skills, study strategies, and cognitive strategy programs.
  • Design new programs to meet special needs and place students into prescribed programs.
  • Interview and evaluate prospective special learning needs students.
  • Administer individualized formal and informal diagnostic tests.
  • Maintain and evaluate accurate records of student progress and redesign programs as necessary.
  • Maintain security of the institution as a primary responsibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with supervised student teaching.
  • At least one course in general psychology, human development, history/philosophy of education, and teaching methods.
  • For secondary positions, at least 24 semester hours in principal fields of instruction.
  • At least 24 semester hours in special education, including a course on teaching exceptional students.
  • GL-07: One year of graduate level education or Superior Academic Achievement.
  • GL-09: Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in teaching special learning needs students in core subjects.
  • Ability to develop individualized lesson plans and modify existing curricula.
  • Experience in selecting, administering, and interpreting academic tests.
