About the position

The Special Education Teacher position at the Bureau of Prisons is designed for corrections professionals who are dedicated to fostering a humane and secure environment while ensuring public safety. The role involves preparing individuals for successful reentry into communities through educational programs tailored to meet the needs of special learning needs students. The teacher will implement a comprehensive curriculum that includes remedial reading, language arts, science, social studies, and math, while also maintaining life skills and cognitive strategy programs. This position requires the design of new educational programs as necessary to address the unique needs of students, as well as the evaluation and placement of students into appropriate programs based on their individual learning requirements. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the Special Education Teacher will conduct interviews and evaluations of prospective students with special learning needs. The role includes administering various diagnostic tests to assess students' educational levels and progress, maintaining accurate records of student achievements, and redesigning programs as needed to ensure that each student receives the support necessary for their success. The teacher will work collaboratively with other correctional institution staff to maintain the security of the institution, as this responsibility is paramount and must be prioritized alongside educational duties. The position is located at FCC Hazelton, WV, and is open to U.S. Citizens, Nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. A 25% group retention incentive will be offered to selectees who meet the criteria for retention incentive. Responsibilities

  • Implement the overall remedial reading, language arts, science, social studies, and/or math curriculums.
  • Maintain life skills, study strategies, and cognitive strategy programs.
  • Design new educational programs to meet special needs and place students into prescribed programs.
  • Interview and evaluate prospective special learning needs students.
  • Administer individualized formal and informal diagnostic special education and literacy tests.
  • Maintain and evaluate accurate records of student progress and redesign programs as necessary.
  • Collaborate with correctional institution staff to maintain security of the institution.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with supervised student teaching and coursework in psychology, human development, history/philosophy of education, and teaching methods.
  • At least 24 semester hours in special education, including courses on teaching exceptional students.
  • For GL-09: Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or a master's degree.
  • For GS-11: Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or a Ph.D. degree.
  • Experience teaching special learning needs students in core subjects and adapting instructional materials and methods.
  • Experience in developing individualized lesson plans and modifying curricula for special learning needs.
  • Experience in selecting, administering, and interpreting academic tests and diagnostic measures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in designing and implementing educational programs based on assessment data.
  • Knowledge of theories and practices related to individualized instruction for students with special learning needs.
