About the position

The Substitute Teacher position at Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a critical role within a 108-bed intensive residential treatment facility that caters to the psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescents aged 11-18 years. The center is equipped with an on-site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming, providing a comprehensive support system for its students. The Substitute Teacher will be responsible for planning and delivering instruction tailored to the unique educational needs of each student assigned to their classroom. This role requires active participation in departmental meetings and the completion of necessary paperwork related to student assessments, individualized education plans (IEPs), monitoring student progress, and transition planning. Effective communication with families and involved agencies is essential to ensure that each student's educational needs are met effectively. In this position, the Substitute Teacher will create a supportive and engaging learning environment that prioritizes the well-being and development of students. The role involves not only delivering educational content but also providing case management for students, ensuring that they receive the necessary support to thrive academically and emotionally. Responsibilities

  • Plan and provide instruction for students assigned to the classroom.
  • Participate in departmental meetings.
  • Complete paperwork related to assessment and individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Monitor and report on student progress.
  • Provide education case management for students.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with families and involved agencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Virginia Special Education regulations and IEP development.
  • Familiarity with behavior management techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective teaching principles and methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.
  • At least 2 years of experience substitute teaching at the middle or high school level is preferred.
  • Experience in a special education and/or mental health setting is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with behavior management techniques.
  • Previous classroom experience in a special education setting.
