About the position

The Gainesville City School System is seeking an English Teacher for grades 9-12 for the 2024-2025 school year. The position is under the general supervision of the Principal and aims to develop students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The teacher will foster communication skills, develop an understanding and appreciation of various types of literature, and motivate students to engage with a wide variety of publications. The role includes promoting the development of skills in English reading, grammar, and syntax.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and administer English education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and translate lesson plans into learning experiences.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in English grammar and syntax, sentence and paragraph structure, composition, vocabulary, and proper word usage.
  • Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions on a variety of reading materials.
  • Work with students to prepare materials for literary publications and contests.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, modifying instructional methods as needed.
  • Maintain familiarity with district and Georgia State standardized tests to adapt curriculum accordingly.
  • Acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for student activities and attendance.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensure student conduct conforms to school standards and establish behavior standards for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with other professional staff members and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and maintain inventory records.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, spelling, and literature.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Familiarity with data information systems and data analysis.
