About the position

The Piano & Keyboard Teaching Artist at Generation Music & Arts Academy is a part-time role focused on providing high-quality music education to underserved youth aged 6 to 18. The position involves designing and implementing engaging piano and keyboard lessons, fostering creativity, and promoting personal growth through music. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in music education and a passion for working with young learners in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver comprehensive piano and keyboard lessons to students aged 6 to 18, considering their abilities, interests, and learning styles.
  • Create a safe and inclusive learning environment where students feel supported and motivated to explore their musical potential.
  • Plan and organize lesson materials, resources, and curricula that align with the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Teach fundamental music theory, sight-reading, and technical skills related to piano and keyboard playing.
  • Foster creativity and self-expression by encouraging students to explore different musical genres and develop their unique musical styles.
  • Assess student progress regularly and provide constructive feedback to help students improve their skills and reach their musical goals.
  • Collaborate with other teaching artists and staff members to coordinate performances, recitals, and showcases highlighting students' achievements.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and participate in program evaluations to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents/guardians, and organization staff to address concerns or provide updates on student progress.
  • Stay informed about current trends and developments in music education, attend professional development opportunities, and actively engage in personal artistic growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in music education, music performance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proficiency in playing piano and keyboard with a strong understanding of music theory and technique.
  • Previous experience teaching piano and keyboard to youth, preferably in a nonprofit or educational setting.
  • Ability to adapt teaching strategies and approaches to meet students' diverse needs and skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with and inspire young learners.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with underserved youth.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
  • Flexibility in scheduling to accommodate after-school and weekend programming.

Nice-to-haves

  • CBEST or substitute credential or license holds a current, valid credential or license appropriate for the assignment as required by Education Code Section 47605 (preferred).
