The Teaching Assistant position at the Cisco Networking Academy is a full-time role that operates on a 10-month school calendar year. The hours per day will vary depending on the specific location of the assignment. The primary responsibility of the Teaching Assistant is to provide support to hearing-impaired students by translating or interpreting academic and non-academic activities into sign language and vice versa. This role is crucial in ensuring that students with hearing impairments can fully participate in the classroom environment and access the curriculum effectively. In addition to interpreting, the Teaching Assistant will instruct and aid students in the use of an interpreter, documenting student behavior and the use of interpreting services on a daily basis. The role also involves tutoring hearing-impaired students in mainstream subjects, meeting regularly with classroom teachers to discuss vocabulary that may require prior explanation, and collaborating with teachers and consultants who specialize in hearing impairments. The Teaching Assistant will assist with normal classroom routines when not engaged in interpreting duties and must dress in a manner that facilitates the reading of signs by students. Communication is key in this role, as the Teaching Assistant will need to relay concerns directly to the teacher or consultant regarding mainstream situations. Additionally, the position requires the collection of data for Individualized Education Program (IEP) interpreting goals and participation in parent conferences and IEP development under the guidance of the teacher or consultant. The Teaching Assistant will also be responsible for interpreting in various situations, including testing and counseling sessions, troubleshooting auditory training equipment, and carrying out any other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher.
