About the position

Mercer County Community College (MCCC) is seeking a part-time Teaching Assistant (TA) for the Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management (HRIM) program. This role is essential in supporting the HRIM faculty, staff, and students by ensuring the organization and cleanliness of the kitchen, dining/classroom, and stockrooms. The TA will assist the Senior Technical Assistant with various tasks, including ordering ingredients and equipment, maintaining inventory, and ensuring that all refrigeration units are kept sanitary and organized according to daily class needs. The position requires flexibility in scheduling, as it may involve day, evening, and weekend hours. The TA will be responsible for cleaning the kitchen floors, conducting routine inventories of stockrooms, refrigerators, and freezer units, and reporting any inventory results or safety issues to the HRIM faculty and staff. Additionally, the TA will provide support and service to students enrolled in HRIM/Culinary lab courses and assist the chef instructor during restaurant classes that are open to the public. Responsibilities

  • Assist HRIM faculty, staff, and students with lab organization, ordering, inventory, and cleanliness.
  • Assist the Senior Technical Assistant with ordering ingredients and equipment as needed.
  • Maintain overall cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, dining/classroom, and stockrooms.
  • Clean kitchen floors by sweeping and mopping to remove food and trash.
  • Ensure that all refrigeration units are kept sanitary, clean, and organized according to daily class needs.
  • Conduct routine inventories of all stockrooms, refrigerators, and freezer units.
  • Report all inventory results and any safety or other lab issues to HRIM faculty and/or staff.
  • Provide support/service to students enrolled in HRIM/Culinary lab courses when needed.
  • Assist the chef instructor during restaurant classes that are open to the public.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to learn the methods and practices used in food safety/storage.
  • Ability to move boxes in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Servsafe certification is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • 15 credits toward an Associate's degree in Hospitality.
  • Experience in working in a professional kitchen in a lead position.
