About the position

The Fall River School District is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual for the position of Team Chair within the Special Education Department. This role is pivotal in enhancing learning outcomes for students with special needs by facilitating the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The Team Chair will work closely with school teams to coordinate evaluation processes, ensuring that all staff understand eligibility guidelines and the necessary steps for compliance. This position requires a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment and ensuring that all students receive the support they need to succeed. In this role, the Team Chair will be responsible for organizing initial and reevaluation IEPs in collaboration with special education teachers and related service providers. They will chair team meetings, maintain documentation, and ensure that all communication with team members is appropriately recorded. The Team Chair will also strive to create the least restrictive environment for students, making recommendations for modifications to the general education program as needed. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of district programming, available services, and the ability to discuss procedural safeguards with parents. The Team Chair will oversee the completion of progress reports for assigned schools and facilitate communication among school staff and administrators. They will assist parents and staff during transitions and provide feedback on IEPs before they are submitted for approval. The role also involves staying current with federal and state regulations and assisting the assigned supervisor with compliance issues. Overall, the Team Chair plays a crucial role in supporting the educational needs of students with disabilities and ensuring that they have access to high-quality instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and support school teams in the coordination of the evaluation process.
  • Help school staff understand eligibility guidelines.
  • Organize all initial and reevaluation IEPs in collaboration with special education teachers and related service providers.
  • Chair team meetings, take notes, and maintain all documents according to the district checklist for the student folder.
  • Strive for the least restrictive environment for students.
  • Make appropriate suggestions for modifications to the General Education program.
  • Discuss procedural safeguards with parents and maintain documentation of communication with team members.
  • Be available to parents for follow-up questions or communication during contractual hours.
  • Maintain knowledge of appropriate grade level curriculum and research-based interventions available at assigned schools.
  • Assist staff with plan compliance and other relevant issues related to the student's needs.
  • Oversee the completion of assigned school(s) progress reports on a term or trimester basis with support from administration.
  • Arrange follow-up meetings with receiving personnel as needed.
  • Notify special educators and related service providers of new student services resulting from evaluations or transfers.
  • Remain current with federal and state regulations and assist with compliance issues.
  • Facilitate communication among onsite school staff and administrators.
  • Assist parents and staff during the transition process for changes in placements.
  • Review and provide feedback on IEPs prior to delivery to supervisor/principal for LEA signature.
  • Perform all other responsibilities as listed in the collective bargaining agreement.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major emphasis on Special Education preferred.
  • Valid Massachusetts teaching license.
  • K-12 teaching experience.
  • Substantial experience in regular and/or special education settings is preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and closing the achievement gap.
  • Experience in designing and implementing standards-based instruction.
  • Effective time and resource management skills.
  • Demonstrated culturally responsive teaching and competencies.
