About the position

The O&M Technician - Operations 1 at CPS Energy is responsible for operating and maintaining equipment at the power plant, specifically focusing on the water pretreatment and cooling water systems. This role involves performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The technician serves as a first responder to operational disruptions and plays a key role in continuous improvement of operating procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and performs regular preventive maintenance on power plant equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and tests equipment, taking regular readings to maximize asset value.
  • Serves as a first responder to operational events and resolves issues within technical skillset.
  • Documents complex issues and submits Work Notifications through the electronic Work Management System.
  • Assists Maintenance Technicians in resolving complex plant issues.
  • Uses Distributed Controls Systems (DCS) to operate equipment, including water treatment systems.
  • Performs laboratory analysis and adjusts processes as necessary.
  • Administers the Lock-out/Tag-out process for the power plant.
  • Manages critical work processes including Safe Work Permitting and Confined Space permitting.
  • Executes and develops Standard Operating Procedures for safe operation of equipment.
  • Communicates with Control Room Operator and Management regarding water chemistry or equipment issues.
  • Manages contractors performing work in the area.
  • Supports troubleshooting efforts for equipment with other departments or vendors.
  • Participates in operator training and continuing education.
  • Manages and records preventive maintenance tasks and activities.
  • Trains and develops other employees in preventive maintenance and routine service activities.
  • Practices situational leadership, safety, and environmental stewardship.
  • Leads problem identification and recommends solutions for equipment or system issues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.
  • Strong aptitude in math and mechanical/electrical ability.
  • Ability to read drawings and understand procedures for power plant operations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must pass Mechanical, Reading, and Math Aptitude tests to be considered for an interview.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous work experience as a power plant operator or maintenance technician.
  • Maintenance skills in electrical, mechanical, or instrumentation.
  • Experience in a power, steam generation, or industrial facility.
  • Combined Cycle power plant experience.
