About the position
The Technical Coach position at American Airlines involves providing technical coaching and mentorship to teams within the organization, focusing on modern technology architecture, engineering practices, and DevOps methodologies. The role requires collaboration with product teams to enhance customer delivery and the engineering culture, while also developing impactful coaching interventions and materials. The coach will work hands-on with software teams to foster learning and optimize processes, ensuring the embodiment of desired team behaviors and culture.
Responsibilities
- Coach teams in the immersive dojo/coaching space at the American Airlines Hangar.
- Serve as a go-to expert on modern technology architecture engineering and DevOps practices.
- Collaborate with product teams to enhance customer delivery.
- Mentor software teams, including engineers and architects, on new problem-solving methods.
- Lead large pairing/mobbing sessions to maximize learning.
- Design and develop facilitator-led materials related to modern engineering practices.
- Embed with teams to understand their environment and behaviors for impactful coaching interventions.
- Develop and implement coaching interventions for software engineers and architects.
- Exemplify and demonstrate preferred team behaviors and address undesirable behaviors when necessary.
- Contribute to the developer experience platform to streamline continuous delivery.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- 4+ years of relevant work experience in an agile environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one object-oriented language.
- Previous experience supporting high-performing Agile/DevOps teams.
- Past experience coaching or mentoring others in any context.
- Practical use of Test-Driven Development (TDD) to design non-trivial systems.
- Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD).
- Expertise in Agile methodologies like Extreme Programming, Kanban, or Scrum.
- Working experience deploying and supporting business-critical Internet scale distributed systems.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience building continuous integration/deployment pipelines.
- Familiarity with The Testing Pyramid and its application.
- Experience with multi-threading and concurrency.
- Skills in debugging, performance profiling, and optimization.
- Knowledge of object-oriented and service-oriented application development patterns.
- Adept communication skills with team members and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to creatively improve and simplify solutions and processes.
