Vast is looking for a Technical Product Manager, reporting to the Director of Information Systems, to support the development of the systems that will be required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations. This will be a full-time, exempt position located in our Long Beach location. The Technical Product Manager will play a crucial role in requirement gathering and definition, ensuring that technical requirements are clearly defined and aligned with business goals. The role involves creating and managing a roadmap that reflects the technical needs and milestones of the product, ensuring that the product's technical aspects are feasible and align with the latest technological standards and practices. The Technical Product Manager will engage with stakeholders, particularly engineering teams, requiring a deep understanding of technical language and constraints. This position focuses on the 'how' of product development, ensuring that technological aspects are feasible and scalable. Responsibilities include uncovering and understanding customer needs, translating them into requirements, and ensuring that implementation plans match expectations. The role also involves assessing emerging products and companies, conducting capability analysis, providing internal and customer training, and serving as a product evangelist and subject matter expert to the technical/developer community. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, often requiring knowledge in software development, architecture, and engineering principles. They will also need to understand and analyze data pipelines, algorithms, and automated systems, and facilitate the creation and maintenance of proper product documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Requirement Gathering and Definition: Understanding technical requirements and ensuring they are clearly defined and aligned with business goals.
  • Roadmap Development: Creating and managing a roadmap that reflects the technical needs and milestones of the product.
  • Technical Oversight: Ensuring the product's technical aspects are feasible and align with the latest technological standards and practices.
  • Technical Expertise: Having a strong technical background, often requiring knowledge in software development, architecture, and engineering principles.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engaging with engineering teams and understanding technical language and constraints.
  • Product Oversight: Focusing on the 'how' of product development, ensuring that technological aspects are feasible and scalable.
  • Uncovering and understanding customer needs and translating them into requirements.
  • Working well with internal teams, including developers, engineers, architects, quality assurance, and operations.
  • Ensuring requirements are fully understood and that implementation plans match expectations.
  • Researching and following technical trends in the industry.
  • Assessing emerging products and companies to measure their potential value or threat to the company and its products.
  • Conducting capability analysis regularly on competitors.
  • Providing internal and customer training on how to use the product.
  • Answering incoming questions about the product and its capabilities.
  • Assessing and addressing technical risks.
  • Understanding and analyzing data pipelines, algorithms, and automated systems.
  • Serving as a product evangelist and subject matter expert to the technical/developer community.
  • Coordinating beta tests.
  • Using database queries to analyze performance indicators, evaluate experiments, etc.
  • Defining success criteria for testing and product acceptance.
  • Facilitating the creation and maintenance of proper product documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience as a product manager, business systems analyst, business intelligence engineer, or software engineer.
  • Proficiency with agile methods, sprint planning, and Kanban or Agile boards.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and team collaboration skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with CAD/PLM software packages.
  • Experience with ERP/MES software packages.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices.
  • Experience with the Atlassian tool chain to include JIRA and Confluence.
  • Experience leading small-group/ad-hoc info sessions (e.g., lunch-and-learns).
  • Extensive experience in the Aerospace and Defense industry.
  • Comfortable working in a high-stress environment balancing several projects at any given time, and the flexibility to adjust for abrupt changes in strategic direction.
