About the position

The Technical Editor/Writer position at IES involves creating and validating a variety of technical documentation that adheres to Military Specifications. The primary focus of this role is to develop Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs), Depot Maintenance Work Requirements (DMWRs), Repair Parts and Special Tools Lists (RPSTLs), and procedural art and illustrated graphics. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to ensure that all technical concepts are accurately represented and that projects are completed on time and within budget. This role requires a strong ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, and to collaborate well within a team environment. Candidates must demonstrate flexibility and a strong work ethic, with the ability to respond quickly to the needs of both the company and its clients. Familiarity with the layout, design, and structure of various levels of Technical Manuals (TMs) is essential, including Operation and Maintenance manuals, Theory of Operation documents, Fault Isolation Procedures, and Illustrated Parts Breakdowns (IPBs). Additionally, the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and software description documents is crucial for success in this role. The position may require working overtime and some travel, as the contractor will need to be on-site at least 50% of the time.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) according to Military Specifications.
  • Create Depot Maintenance Work Requirements (DMWRs) and Repair Parts and Special Tools Lists (RPSTLs).
  • Produce procedural art and illustrated graphics that meet applicable Military Specifications.
  • Interface with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to verify and understand technical concepts.
  • Ensure project completion is on time and within budget by developing courses of action.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and software description documents.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to meet project goals.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
  • Strong teaming skills and flexibility with an outstanding work ethic.
  • Willingness to work overtime and travel as required.
  • 2-3 years of professional experience in technical writing or related field.
  • Experience with EXtensible Markup Language (XML) and Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT).
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-40051-1 and MIL-STD-40051-2, preferably Revision B.
  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-2361C or later release.
  • Proficiency in Arbortext Editor including Styler (5.4 or higher) and UltraEdit or similar.
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro and Content Management Systems such as WindChill.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with the layout, design, and structure of Organizational, Intermediate, and Depot level Technical Manuals (TMs).
  • Ability to produce illustrations using graphics tools such as ISOdraw or Autrotrol.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Electronics, Hydraulics, and Mechanical Systems.
  • Familiarity with Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
  • Past experience working with US Army or other Military publications.
  • Experience with Interactive Authoring and Display System (IADS) 4.0 or later.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Maintenance System (EMS) Next Generation (NG).
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
