About the position

As a Technical Program Manager (TPM) at Confluent, you will play a pivotal role in managing multiple Kafka initiatives across various teams and stakeholder functions, including Product and Security. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve closely monitoring dependencies with other organizations while assisting in planning, prioritization, risk management, stakeholder reporting, operations, and trade-offs. This position requires a strategic cross-organizational view to effectively manage projects that span multiple quarters, focusing on cost margin improvements and security-related programs. In this role, you will be responsible for driving initiatives that require prior experience in managing cloud projects, emphasizing an operational focus. You will need to demonstrate the ability to deep-dive into technical issues and engage in organizational problem-solving. A significant aspect of your role will be to shield development teams from chaos, ensuring streamlined processes for the successful and timely delivery of long-term programs. The programs you oversee may involve complex technical projects aimed at enhancing performance and scalability, as well as multi-region disaster recovery. Therefore, a strong understanding of cloud fundamentals is essential to support these initiatives effectively. You will work closely with stakeholders to drive critical initiatives, ensuring that projects are delivered on time while regularly communicating progress and status updates to key stakeholders. Additionally, you will proactively identify and resolve any roadblocks or challenges that may affect project timelines. Your responsibilities will also include training and mentoring other leaders in program management, making technical decisions to keep projects on track, and explaining technical architecture and trade-offs to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders. You will collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Security leadership to streamline project execution on a predictable schedule, run cross-functional meetings, and facilitate decision-making regarding schedule adjustments and bug triage. Ultimately, you will take ownership of engaging with various engineering and product stakeholders to drive end-to-end execution, ensuring alignment with competing priorities and understanding the roadmap needs of dependent teams.

Responsibilities

  • Work with stakeholders to drive cross-cutting and critical initiatives for the company.
  • Ensure timely delivery of projects, regularly communicating progress and status to key stakeholders.
  • Proactively identify and resolve roadblocks/challenges affecting projects.
  • Train and help other leaders to improve their program management skills.
  • Make technical decisions to keep projects running smoothly.
  • Explain technical architecture, decisions, and trade-offs to both engineering and other functions.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Security leadership to streamline and drive projects on a predictable schedule.
  • Run cross-functional meetings and drive decision-making around schedule adjustments, bug triage, and internal and external partner/customer delivery.
  • Engage with various engineering and product stakeholders to drive end-to-end execution, understanding potential risks and alignment models for competing priorities.
  • Help the Kafka team understand the priorities of other dependent teams to unblock their roadmap needs.

Requirements

  • Strong technical skills, especially knowledge of cloud networking fundamentals.
  • Minimum of 2 years of prior TPM experience in driving end-to-end lifecycle of complex and massive projects across organizations.
  • Experience driving cloud platform engineering cross-functional projects is a big plus.
  • Experience driving operations across teams is also a big plus.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills to work with engineering and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience in highly agile environments applying JIRA reporting and sprint planning is a big plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
