About the position

The Technical/Project Manager at Michael Baker International is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing infrastructure projects specifically within the bridge and structural service line. This position requires a blend of technical expertise and project management skills, as the selected candidate will be tasked with performing technical oversight, managing staff development, handling contract management, and developing technical and cost proposals. The role also involves client management for targeted statewide clients, ensuring that projects meet the high standards of quality and safety expected in the industry. Under the guidance of the Structural Department Manager, the successful candidate will engage in a variety of high-visibility projects, collaborating closely with structural engineering team members, Project Managers from other Michael Baker offices, and the Regional Bridge Practice Lead. This collaborative environment is designed to foster technical excellence and innovation in delivering solutions for state, county, and municipal clients. In this role, the Technical/Project Manager will be responsible for individual staff management and mentoring, coordinating tasks and project schedules, and maintaining effective communication with clients regarding project issues, schedules, and budgets. The candidate will assist in proposal production and marketing initiatives, and may serve as the discipline lead responsible for all facets of the project. Detailed technical peer reviews will be a key responsibility, along with maintaining technical knowledge through various training initiatives and professional development opportunities. The role also includes attending professional society meetings to develop and maintain relationships with key clients and potential hires, ensuring that quality standards and project deadlines are consistently met, and overseeing the project’s Health and Safety Plan. Regular status reports to the Structural Department Manager will be required to keep all stakeholders informed of project progress and client satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Individual staff management and mentoring for all structural group staff.
  • Coordinates tasks and project schedules.
  • Communicates with clients regarding project issues, schedules, and budgets.
  • Assists with proposal production and implementing marketing initiatives.
  • May serve as the discipline lead responsible for all facets of the task or discipline of the project.
  • Performs detailed technical peer reviews.
  • Responsible for maintaining technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives; attending seminars, reviewing professional publications, attending in-house systems/management training.
  • Attending professional society meetings; where you will work to develop and maintain relationships with key clients, teaming partners, and potential technical staff hires.
  • Verifying that quality standards and project deadlines are met.
  • Maintaining client satisfaction.
  • Oversight of project safety Health and Safety Plan.
  • Direct coordination with the client's Project Representatives.
  • Providing regular status reports to Structural Department Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, with a concentration in Structural Engineering & Bridge Design, preferred. Master in Structural Engineering, desirable.
  • 10 years of progressive structural related design experience with NJDOT, New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey clientele.
  • P.E. license in NJ. NY and PA desirable.
  • Perform complex structural analysis and prepare design calculations using Midas, AASHTOWare Bridge Rating, STAAD, and other similar software tools.
  • Oversee structural details and construction plans in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • Excellent time management skills, the ability to multitask and prioritize competing project obligations.
  • Strong English language skills, written and verbal, and the ability to prepare professional, well-written proposals, reports and engineering project documents are essential to long-term success in this role.
  • Client management skills; demonstrated ability leading and managing the design and detailing of complex bridge projects, with an emphasis on experience and knowledge of structural infrastructures.
  • Microsoft Office Suite; advanced knowledge of technical software used in bridge and structural engineering.
