As part of a passionate and accomplished team of experts, the Product Cost Engineer is responsible for developing cost estimates, analyzing cost drivers and driving execution of cost improvement initiatives for assigned programs. This position will lead the development of cost models and analytics required to meet or exceed the cost targets for space flight programs. This includes working across engineering, procurement, manufacturing, and mission operations to collect estimation inputs and provide insightful outputs for decision making and regular reporting of product cost status and outlook. The position will directly impact the history of space exploration by lowering the cost of access to space.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to measure and reduce product lifecycle costs.
  • Develop and manage a 'single source of truth' for recurring cost estimates and provide regular cost variance analyses vs. targets and actuals.
  • Provide input for command media in gated reviews and development processes that deal with product cost requirements (business cases, design to cost targets, trade studies, manufacturing readiness reviews, etc.).
  • Work with IPTs to develop cost improvement roadmaps.
  • Partner with supply chain to identify opportunities for multiple sources, LTAs, and preferred sourcing positions.
  • Collaborate with the manufacturing operations to identify opportunities to reduce takt and end-to-end cycle times on work cell and component basis, improve yields and reduce scrap.
  • Support Mission Operations to identify opportunities to reduce labor hours & cycle time through automation, effective sparing / logistics and lean events to eliminate unnecessary steps in processes.
  • Lead priority kaizens to get cross-functional costs out of components and assemblies.

Requirements

  • BS or MS degree or equivalent experience with emphasis in engineering, cost management, supply chain.
  • Track record of demonstrated success and progressive responsibility increases.
  • Experience with defining and implementing analytical tools and processes.
  • Highly effective and professional verbal and written communication skills, strong focus on teamwork and internal/external customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally within a geographically disperse organization.
  • Attention to detail and high quality of deliverables.
  • Ability to lead by influence, earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice-to-haves

  • MBA or Graduate level degree in Engineering.
  • Experience with aerospace procurement, government compliance and quality systems.
  • Experience with value engineering and cost management initiatives.
