About the position

The Technical Project Manager - HMI Development at Patterson-UTI is responsible for overseeing a large-scale project aimed at modernizing the Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems across the company's extensive rig fleet. This role involves the conception, development, testing, and continuous sustainment of new drilling control system HMI applications, requiring expert knowledge in control and data acquisition systems. The position also offers opportunities for additional responsibilities within the Controls and Automation team, supporting various projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the drilling controls HMI development project through all phases including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling, and deployment.
  • Develop supporting technical documentation such as design specifications, test procedures, commissioning procedures, training materials, and technical presentations.
  • Determine required resources and coordinate with internal departments and third-party companies to assemble the project team.
  • Define clear deliverables, roles, and responsibilities for specific tasks or initiatives; allocate tasks and resources among team members.
  • Create project timelines with established milestones and provide updates to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate regular technical team meetings to assess progress and address questions or challenges regarding projects.
  • Identify potential risks and proactively mitigate them; develop and execute contingency plans as necessary.
  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for drilling control HMI design, including system architecture, device communication, user experience, and data logging functionalities.
  • Develop and manage a quality assurance program; create test plans to ensure applications undergo adequate testing before field deployment.
  • Assist with coordinating beta test programs, including rig selection and software/hardware installation.
  • Define beta test acceptance criteria and partner with developers and operations teams for proper measurement and control.
  • Develop recommendations for further testing or application development as part of the product development cycle.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent industry-related experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in developing or leading the development of HMI programs for control systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5+ years of experience in product development of drilling control system HMI programs.
  • 5+ years of experience in technical project management.
  • Experience in Agile or Scrum software development techniques.
  • PMP Certification.
