About the position

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is seeking a Technical Project Manager to join the Data Science Lab (DaSL). This role is pivotal in managing and driving technical teamwork within the Data Science Lab Technical Team, ensuring alignment with product priorities. The Technical Project Manager will act as a Scrum Master, facilitating the breakdown of work into manageable tasks and stories, and collaborating with the team to set estimates. The position requires the facilitation of necessary scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily standups, and retrospectives, while also aligning with product managers to prioritize technical work effectively. The Technical Project Manager will support and coach the technical team in agile and scrum practices, helping to eliminate impediments by engaging relevant stakeholders within the organization. This role also involves working closely with product managers to manage the backlog and guide the team, ensuring a healthy team dynamic with respect to priorities and scope. The successful candidate will develop and present sprint-level reports to analyze team capacity and resourcing, ensuring that all work adheres to the defined steps and procedures outlined in the definition of done (DoD) framework. In addition to managing feature development for cross-institutional products and projects, the Technical Project Manager will document project work, participate in story and epic development, and maintain current documentation. This position also includes coaching and mentoring other technical project managers in agile project management practices, ensuring effective sprint reviews across multiple stakeholders within the institution. The role reports to the Data Product Management Team Lead and is integral to the success of the Data Science Lab's mission to improve human health and cancer care through effective data strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the execution and adoption of Scrum ceremonies (e.g., sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily standups, retrospectives, and reviews/demos).
  • Support and coach the technical team through agile and scrum practices.
  • Eliminate impediments for the team by engaging the right stakeholders within the organization.
  • Support the product managers in managing the backlog and guiding the team while facilitating a healthy team dynamic with respect to priorities and scope.
  • Work with product managers to develop and present sprint level reports (e.g., burnups, cumulative flows, velocity charts) to analyze and assess team capacity and resourcing.
  • Ensure work implemented by teams adheres to the steps and procedures as outlined within the definition of done (DoD) framework.
  • Document project work, participate in story/epic development, and ensure current and well-maintained documentation.
  • Work across departmental groups to manage work on feature development for cross-institutional products and projects.
  • Coach and mentor technical project managers about agile project management.
  • Work with multiple stakeholders across the institution to ensure sprint reviews are effective.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years IT project management experience.
  • Experience with project management tools, methodologies, and best practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience managing multiple projects for the full life cycle utilizing a project management methodology.
  • Scrum Master Certification.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced dynamic environment with high degrees of ambiguity to deliver large and complex data projects.
  • Experience managing more than one Scrum team.
