About the position

The Technical Project Manager position at the University of Washington's Department of Epidemiology, specifically within the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC), is a pivotal role that combines technical proficiency with project management expertise. The NACC serves as a central hub for data, communication, and collaboration for the National Institute on Aging's Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRC) Program. With over $58 million in funding and a vast dataset of more than 48,600 participants, the NACC is at the forefront of Alzheimer's research, focusing on modernizing data infrastructure and enhancing interoperability with other repositories. This role is essential in driving innovations that will transform Alzheimer's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementia (AD/ADRD) research and discovery. As a Technical Project Manager, you will be responsible for managing high-impact, cross-functional projects that involve collaboration with various teams, including technology, research, grants and finance, and external stakeholders. Your role will require you to define project requirements, determine milestones, facilitate coordination, track progress, and ensure timely delivery of applications and research engineering deliverables. You will work autonomously, making critical decisions regarding the management of technology programs and ensuring effective communication between teams with diverse skill sets. The position entails developing novel projects, such as the Alzheimer's Research Cohort Selection Tool and the NACC Data Platform, which are crucial for advancing research capabilities. You will lead project planning and execution, manage complex logistics, and ensure that all deliverables meet deadlines. Your ability to communicate effectively and bridge the gap between technical and non-technical staff will be vital for project success. Additionally, you will be responsible for mentoring team members, enhancing collaboration, and managing vendor relationships to optimize project outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop novel and innovative projects for new data functionality provided by NACC.
  • Design and manage up to 15 new projects spanning across 4 teams.
  • Develop and implement new policies and procedures for the Alzheimer's Research Cohort Selection Tool.
  • Attain a deep understanding of the software integral to NACC's data systems.
  • Convert complex research outcomes into clear, actionable development requirements.
  • Develop and maintain a high-level understanding of agile software development approaches.
  • Manage comprehensive project workflows by collaborating with key team leads.
  • Lead complex project workflows across NACC teams and external stakeholders.
  • Detail and document complex analytic processes using Critical Path Method (CPM).
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Statements of Work (SoW).
  • Lead mission-critical activities such as gathering and analysis of requirements.
  • Utilize triple constraints approach to develop and oversee comprehensive work plans.
  • Manage and communicate with relevant teams to scope, implement, and lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT).
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments for projects.
  • Act as a primary point of contact between technical and non-technical staff.
  • Collaborate closely with NACC leadership and team members to meet project deliverables.
  • Produce detailed summaries, roadmaps, user flows, wireframes, and prototypes as needed.
  • Provide strategic project management support for new projects and initiatives.
  • Design and implement strategies that increase the visibility and impact of the ADRC program.
  • Coach and mentor team members on project management tools and techniques.
  • Champion and facilitate effective collaboration between the team and other groups within NACC.
  • Lead the preparation and management of activities for NACC's Strategic Technical Roadmap.
  • Manage and regulate access to externally shared resources within NACC's SharePoint drive.
  • Manage and maintain vendor relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social sciences, business management, journalism, communication, computer science, or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years' experience leading cross-functional teams to deliver projects with multiple dependencies and constraints.
  • Experience with multiple Project Management software including Asana, Smartsheet, Trello, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Experience with data management tools such as SQL and Oracle.
  • Experience with the software development lifecycle, including Agile, Waterfall, and hybrid methodologies.
  • Advanced experience with technical project documentation including Statements of Work, Requirements and Analysis, Risk Assessments, Critical Path Project Plans, Gap Analysis, Bug Tracking and Support Ticketing software.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Strong project-management skills and the ability to multitask to meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and proactive.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
