About the position

Iridium is seeking a confident and motivated Technical Project Manager with over eight years of experience in program and project management support for technical projects. This role is crucial for the Technology Development and Operations team, where the Project Manager will ensure the successful completion of projects that are vital to the future of Iridium's business and its value-added partners and end customers. The projects managed are often large, complex, and high-profile technology programs that focus on end-to-end system solutions, new product development, or network elements within the Iridium architecture. The ideal candidate will possess specialized knowledge of project management fundamentals, including business case development, negotiation, risk management, schedule management, budget management, and subcontractor management. In this fast-paced environment, the Technical Project Manager will provide coordination and technical oversight support, playing a key role in the success of project delivery while navigating interdependencies in a matrixed environment. Responsibilities include managing the coordination and delivery of diverse assignments with clear end goals, monitoring the project's financial performance against established budgets, ensuring quality results, and partnering with Program Managers to complete necessary process steps for ongoing project completion. The Project Manager will also support technical teams in identifying and solving technical uncertainties, partner with stakeholders to understand their business needs, and serve as a sounding board for strategic project decisions. Building stable working relationships with internal personnel and participating in broader team activities are also essential aspects of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the coordination and delivery of diverse assignments designed with end goals in mind, including setting personal priorities and assisting others with executing assigned tasks
  • Monitor and help ensure the project's financial performance targets as established in project pipeline budgets and Estimates to Complete
  • Take the lead in ensuring that projects deliver quality results, activities are well-designed, and funds are expended to meet overall project objectives, contract deliverables, and indicator targets
  • Partner with Program Managers in completing process steps for ongoing completion of projects
  • Support technical teams in identifying, prioritizing, and solving technical uncertainties
  • Partner with stakeholders to understand their business needs to support the requirements and planning basis in a methodical and organized manner, including use of configuration management practices (CM)
  • Serve as a sounding board for strategic project decisions and provide recommendations for program design and delivery
  • Effectively manage and prioritize assignments for self and others within the project team
  • Develop and manage project plans
  • Build stable working relationships with internal personnel
  • Participate in broader team activities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; concentration in Engineering, Mathematics, or Science preferred
  • 8+ years' related program/project management experience, preferably in a large, global organization
  • 8+ years' experience in assisting with complex technical projects, preferably direct experience in telecommunications, ground networks, electronic product development/manufacturing or satellites
  • Experience managing Scaled Agile development projects
  • Strong knowledge of project management methodologies
  • Strong familiarity with tools and software applications that support project management and project portfolio management
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information to cross-departmental groups or those unfamiliar with the topic
  • An analytical mindset, with the ability to understand a situation or problem and think critically to make decisions and come up with out-of-the-box solutions
  • Proactivity in providing feedback and sharing your knowledge with others
  • The ability to prioritize your own tasks and potentially the tasks of others while making sure deadlines are met

Nice-to-haves

  • Project Management Accreditation (PMP, PMI or equivalent) a plus
  • Experience collaborating globally across timelines and cultures
