About the position

The Technical Publications Writer will play a crucial role in maintaining and updating manuals related to aircraft maintenance and the operation of UPS aircraft. This position requires the specialist to process change notifications in manuals, adhering to established standards and style guides, while also consulting with both internal and external departments. The role involves a thorough review and editing of text, illustrations, and wiring diagrams to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements. It is important to note that this position is not remote; the candidate will be required to report to the office in Louisville, Kentucky. In this role, the Technical Publications Writer will be responsible for researching and interpreting technical information to develop comprehensive technical documents. The candidate will work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team to revise a set of airplane technical manuals, utilizing data from engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers. A key aspect of the job will be the ability to create line art illustrations that depict aircraft parts and assemblies, which will be used in technical manuals, parts catalogs, and other related publications. Strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills are essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Research and interpret technical information to develop technical documents.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to revise airplane technical manuals from engineering, manufacturing, and supplier data.
  • Create line art to illustrate aircraft parts and assemblies for use in technical manuals and related publications.
  • Review and edit text, illustrations, and wiring diagrams to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.

Requirements

  • Aviation technical writing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of technical publications regulatory requirements and Industry Writing Specifications (ATA, S1000D, typical DTDs/schema, elements, and attributes).
  • Experience with structured authoring environment (SGML, XML) and .xml authoring software.
  • Experience with MS Office suite.
  • Experience with interpreting engineering orders.
  • Experience creating and editing vector drawing illustrations.
  • Knowledge of aircraft technical documentation, including illustrated parts catalogs, airplane maintenance manuals, operator manuals, and installation instructions.
  • A fundamental understanding of FARs as they apply to aircraft operations and maintenance.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and personal organization.
  • Self-starter and able to make sound writing decisions with minimum assistance from supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with .xml authoring software: 3 years (Preferred)
  • Aviation technical writing: 3 years (Preferred)
  • Vector drawing illustrations: 3 years (Preferred)
  • Associate degree or higher in Aircraft Maintenance, English, Technical Communications, Engineering, or a related field (Preferred)
