About the position

Epic Games is seeking a Technical UI Designer to join our team and contribute to the development of Fortnite Battle Royale. In this role, you will be an integral part of a collaborative team focused on creating user-centered designs that enhance player experiences. Your primary responsibilities will include implementing UI designs and screens within Unreal Engine, building rapid prototypes, and developing layouts that are both visually appealing and functional. You will work closely with UX Designers, UI Artists, and UI Engineers to ensure that features are shipped effectively to millions of users worldwide. As a Technical UI Designer, you will tackle complex problems by breaking down features and wireframes into necessary widget structures. You will propose data inputs for these widgets and collaborate with various teams to communicate the technical requirements for executing features. Your role will also involve creating or modifying layouts based on provided wireframes, implementing blueprint logic for presentation needs, and assisting UI Artists with layout issues and debugging. You will be expected to think critically about multi-platform accessibility and localization needs, ensuring these considerations are integrated into the widget creation process. Additionally, you will focus on building performance-optimized widgets and adhering to best practices as they evolve. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on UI Screens and Features, breaking down feature/wireframe into necessary widget structures and proposing data inputs into the widgets.
  • Work with UX & UI Art, Engineering, and Game Design to identify goals and communicate the technical requirements of executing the feature.
  • Create or modify layouts from the provided wireframes with appropriate widget setup for UI Artists to begin styling and building on widgets.
  • Implement blueprint logic when presentation logic calls for it, assisting UI Artists with special presentation behavior, layout issues, and debugging problems.
  • Build modularity into widgets for rapid prototyping for Art & UX designers.
  • Consider multi-platform, accessibility, and localization needs in the widget creation process.
  • Create performance-optimized widgets and follow/set best practices as they evolve with performance and data.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience building UI and experiences in game engines across multiple platforms (mobile, web, pc, consoles).
  • 2+ years of experience working in Agile environments and on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • 1+ years of experience shipping updates and new features to a user base on a regular cadence.
  • Experience with game engines (Custom engine, Unity, UE5, Lumberyard, Snowdrop, etc.).
  • Strong logical problem-solving skills with attention to detail and excellent written and communication skills.
  • Ability to translate communication across departments, summarizing technical issues for non-technical team members and empowering others on the team.
  • Experience with scripting or visual scripting.
  • Experience in setting/keeping best practices and reducing tech debt as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with UI art on 2+ AAA game titles, ideally a live service game.
  • Experience with Unreal Engine is preferred.
