About the position

We are seeking a technical writer and editor to support the development of clear, accurate scientific and technical communications products for Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) research and scientific staff and programs. This position is crucial in ensuring that the scientific and technical documents produced by ORNL meet high standards of clarity and accuracy. The successful candidate will work closely with ORNL researchers and scientists, providing essential editing, revising, and rewriting services for a variety of documents, including scientific papers, technical reports, presentations, and proposals. This role is part of the Technical Communications group within the Communications and Community Engagement Directorate at ORNL, and it will report directly to the Technical Communications group leader. In this position, the technical writer and editor will collaborate with both experienced staff and researchers to enhance the quality of written materials. The role requires a keen eye for detail and a strong understanding of scientific terminology and concepts, as well as the ability to communicate complex information in a clear and accessible manner. The successful candidate will be expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring that all deadlines are met while maintaining the highest standards of quality in all communications products. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the impactful research conducted at ORNL and to play a vital role in the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Edit, revise, and rewrite a variety of scientific and technical documents, presentations, and proposals.
  • Collaborate with ORNL researchers and scientists to improve the clarity and accuracy of their written materials.
  • Assist in the development of clear and effective communication products for various audiences.
  • Manage multiple writing and editing projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion and adherence to quality standards.
  • Work under the supervision of more experienced staff to enhance personal skills and knowledge in technical writing.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in technical writing and editing, preferably in a scientific or technical field.
  • Strong understanding of scientific terminology and concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with researchers and scientists.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with scientific research or technical documentation in a laboratory setting.
