About the position

The Technical Writer and Editor position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) involves supporting the laboratory's scientific and technical communications by editing and revising various documents to ensure clarity and accuracy. The role requires collaboration with researchers and staff to produce materials that effectively convey research findings and technical developments to diverse audiences. The successful candidate will report to the Technical Communications manager and will be responsible for maintaining high standards of writing and editing while adhering to established guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Edit, revise, and rewrite various types of reports, proposals, journal articles, procedures, and conference papers to enhance clarity and coherence.
  • Edit and revise manuscripts of nonnative speakers to improve accuracy and readability for publication.
  • Understand complex science- and technology-related research and revise documents based on technical data and results in collaboration with researchers.
  • Work with scientists and managers to produce compelling materials for multiple audiences, including sponsors and executive leadership.
  • Apply ORNL publications standards and external guidelines to ensure compliance in all written materials.
  • Suggest visual materials and collaborate with graphic artists to develop effective products.
  • Advise customers on usage, style, format, and document preparation.
  • Provide project management to ensure publications meet requirements and deadlines.
  • Mentor customers to improve their writing skills and enhance their products.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and tutorials for technical staff as needed.

Requirements

  • A BS/BA degree in English, technical writing, or a STEM field with relevant experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in technical or scientific editing and writing.
  • Excellent command of standard American English style and usage, demonstrated by writing and editing samples.
  • Proven scientific/technical reading, writing, and editing skills with knowledge of standard style guides.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills to handle multiple assignments.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while working independently and in teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • A MS degree in English, technical writing, or a related field.
  • Experience editing the work of researchers in scientific and technical fields.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Firm grasp of standard business computer software, especially Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
