About the position

The Technical Writer and Illustrator at Piper Aircraft is responsible for creating, researching, writing, and illustrating technical documents necessary for the safe operation and maintenance of Piper airplanes. This role involves collaborating with various departments to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with civil air regulations, while also supporting the technical support team as needed.

Responsibilities

• Create technical documents for owners, pilots, and mechanics of Piper airplanes.
• Study drawings, specifications, and product samples to integrate technology and operating procedures.
• Review published materials and recommend revisions in scope, format, content, and reproduction methods.
• Interview production and engineering personnel to understand product technologies and production methods.
• Determine the need for revisions in previously published materials and develop new content.
• Observe production and experimental activities to detail operating procedures.
• Confer with customer representatives and vendors to establish technical specifications for publication.
• Organize material and complete writing assignments according to FAA, GAMA, ATA, and Piper standards.
• Edit and standardize material prepared by other writers or personnel.
• Select and render illustrations and artwork from various sources.
• Coordinate draft reviews with engineering and flight test teams for technical accuracy.
• Lay out and prepare material for print, microfiche, CD, and web publication.
• Support other departments with desktop publishing expertise.
• Maintain records and files of work and revisions.
• Assign part code numbers for service parts and kits.

Requirements

• Associate's degree (AS or AA) in a relevant field.
• Four years of desktop publishing experience in a technical writing environment or equivalent education and experience.
• Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Acrobat, and QuarkXPress.
• Familiarity with CAD and ability to interpret blueprints and technical specifications.
• Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
• Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and adhere to safety policies.
