About the position

The Technical Writer II at O'Neil & Associates, Inc. is tasked with transforming complex technical information into clear, concise documentation that adheres to customer specifications. This role requires collaboration with seasoned writers and various internal teams to interpret contractual specifications, engineering drawings, and reports. The Technical Writer will produce technical documentation that meets customer requirements and assists in training employees on these specifications. Communication with customers and their representatives may also be necessary throughout the project lifecycle. In this position, the Technical Writer will be responsible for writing technical documents and manuals according to established specifications. This includes troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems on heavy-duty equipment, as well as researching existing data to leverage previously developed text and illustrations. The writer will draft text materials ensuring that all components are completed and coordinated according to the final product requirements. Additionally, the Technical Writer will document and archive technical data efficiently to support future projects, track time spent on tasks, and communicate project status to management. The role also involves adhering to safety procedures, assisting in training department employees, and reviewing project requirements to ensure compliance with customer specifications. The Technical Writer will coordinate with the Project Lead to manage project phases and allocate resources effectively. This position may require working in various environments, including general office settings and manufacturing facilities, and may involve physical demands such as lifting and working with heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Write technical documents/manuals according to specifications for customers.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and/or pneumatic systems on heavy-duty equipment.
  • Research existing data to maximize the use of previously developed text and/or illustrations.
  • Draft text materials to ensure text and illustrations are completed and coordinated per final product requirements.
  • Document and archive technical data over long periods in an efficient, established method to aid in future related projects.
  • Track and record time spent on projects.
  • Communicate status of work to management and any needs for additional information.
  • Complete assigned tasks according to established deadlines, customer specifications, and company policies and procedures.
  • Follow all established safety procedures and report violations to appropriate personnel; may make recommendations on safety procedures.
  • Assist management with training of department employees; relay training needs and status to immediate supervisor.
  • Review project requirements to comply with customer specifications and agreements.
  • Assist in communicating project status and deadlines with customers and other internal and external personnel.
  • Assist in allocating resources to projects and accurately estimating the number of hours needed to complete current and future projects.
  • Coordinate with Project Lead to assist in managing phases of the project.
  • Perform any other job-related instructions, as requested with reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Associate degree in a technical or mechanical field, or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Associate degree in Automotive Repair or related field is preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) or Arts (BA) degree in business, engineering, technical field, or related degree is preferred.
  • Four to six (2-4) years of experience writing complete, complex technical documents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SATCOM, RF, and satellite devices is preferred.
