The Technical Writer II position at Carnegie Mellon University involves supporting the preparation of grant proposals and reports within the Machine Learning Department. The successful candidate will manage submission processes, ensuring compliance with funding agency requirements while effectively communicating complex ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Writing, editing, and assembling detailed, accurate, and technical documents for submission to government agencies and private funding organizations.
  • Collaborating closely with faculty, researchers, and staff to communicate sophisticated ideas and related fields in a clear and compelling way.
  • Assisting in drafting, reviewing, and refining technical proposals to secure funding from federal agencies (e.g., NSF, DARPA, NIH), private foundations, and industry partners.
  • Preparing technical and financial progress reports for funding bodies, summarizing research outcomes, milestones achieved, and future objectives.
  • Managing submission processes and ensuring that proposals adhere to requirements of funding agencies, including formatting, page limits, and technical specifications.
  • Coordinating with stakeholders to manage timelines, gather input, and meet submission deadlines for large projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • 3 years proven ability in technical writing, grant writing, or proposal development, ideally in an academic or research setting.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to balance multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Experience in using generative AI for writing and research assistance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with writing in a STEM field, particularly in computer science, engineering or machine learning.
  • Experienced in writing proposals for large, multi-institutional projects or centers.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies, data analysis, and statistical techniques commonly used in machine learning research.
