About the position

The Technical Writer III at Olgoonik Corporation is tasked with the critical responsibility of writing, editing, reviewing, and maintaining a variety of documents and publications for the Program Office. This role is essential in ensuring that all documentation adheres to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) standards. The Technical Writer will engage in the creation and design of various publications, which may include technical documents, reports, student guides, instructor guides, course materials, and other reference materials. A key aspect of this position is to ensure that all materials are consistent with the Department of State (DoS) policies, Training and Performance standards, and established formats, thereby maintaining the integrity and usability of the content. In this role, the Technical Writer will collaborate closely with instructional designers and subject matter experts. This collaboration may involve observing or participating in tests or demonstrations to gather the necessary information and content for the production of original documentation. The writer will also be responsible for consulting on or selecting illustrative materials for inclusion in various publications, which may include photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts. Furthermore, the Technical Writer will perform initial and final reviews of publications/documentation, providing recommendations for revisions to scope, format, content, and ensuring that the final products meet the required tone, design, layout, editorial, and production specifications before release. The position requires a high level of independence, as the employee is expected to work with minimal supervision according to established policies and accepted practices. The Technical Writer must maintain files and copies of work assignments and revisions in accordance with best practices and standards, ensuring that all documentation is up to date and accessible.

Responsibilities

  • Creates, designs, maintains, and edits various publications including technical documents, reports, student guides, instructor guides, and course materials.
  • Collaborates with instructional designers and subject matter experts to acquire information for documentation.
  • Ensures materials are consistent with Department of State policies and established formats.
  • Consults on or selects illustrative materials for publications, including photographs, drawings, and diagrams.
  • Provides documentation to meet the requests of clients, subject matter experts, and management.
  • Performs initial reviews of publications and provides recommendations for revisions.
  • Conducts final reviews of proposed publications for tone, design, layout, and editorial aspects before release.
  • Applies consistent style, grammar, and punctuation practices to documents.
  • Maintains files and copies of work assignments and revisions according to best practices.
  • Works independently with infrequent supervision.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of six (6) years' experience in editing and publication at a Technical Writer II level or equivalent.
  • Intermediate-level understanding of publication design concepts.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong command of the English language, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong time management, project management, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to acquire and present technical information through various methods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and Paint.
  • Proficiency in Publisher, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Windows Media Player, Snipping Tool, and Notepad.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft SharePoint preferred.
