About the position

The Technical Writer / Illustrator at Fairbanks Morse Defense is responsible for preparing technical manuals and documentation to meet customer deliverable requirements. This role involves translating complex technical information into clear, understandable language and creating illustrations to complement the written content. The position requires collaboration with various departments to ensure that all documentation meets contract specifications and is delivered on time.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare written copy for technical manuals to meet contract requirements.
  • Develop repair parts lists and illustrations using bills of material and engineering drawings.
  • Manage vendors providing data development resources.
  • Review specifications related to technical manual deliverables and estimate effort required.
  • Interact with various departments to determine the scope and formatting necessary for documentation.
  • Draft text material for new technical documentation and update existing documents as necessary.
  • Prepare clear technical illustrations and graphic depictions to support written text.
  • Organize and deliver preliminary contract documentation and incorporate customer feedback into final deliverables.

Requirements

  • Minimum Associate degree or equivalent experience in a maintenance-related technical writing environment.
  • Minimum five years' experience in a technical writing environment, preferably in heavy machinery manufacturing, military maintenance, power generation, or marine applications.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to read blueprints and engineering orders.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Highly skilled with Microsoft Office, Oracle, and XML authoring/document development in ArborText and Notepad ++.
  • Minimum 2-3 years' experience with 2D and 3D illustration/modeling software, preferably SolidWorks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Provisioning data requirements such as Reference Number, CAGE, Item Name, and Provisioning Parts List for contract deliverables.
