About the position

GovCIO is currently hiring for a Technical Writer to support the Readiness & Employment Service contract for the VA. This position is fully remote, allowing for flexibility while contributing to important government IT services. The Technical Writer will be responsible for creating, editing, and managing a variety of technical documents, including procedure manuals, user manuals, programming manuals, service manuals, and operational specifications. The goal is to communicate technical specifications and instructions clearly and effectively to a diverse audience. In this role, the Technical Writer will acquire subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing production methods, and referring to technical specifications, blueprints, and engineering illustrations. They will oversee the preparation of illustrative materials, selecting appropriate drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to enhance the clarity of publications. A critical aspect of the job involves conducting quality reviews of materials to ensure accuracy and comprehensibility. The Technical Writer will also translate complex data into user-friendly text for various formats, including print and electronic publications, technical journals, user and training manuals, government proposals, websites, and podcasts. They will gather information through research, statistical reports, and interviews with technical staff, and develop cataloging systems to maintain records and archives of published materials. Additionally, the Technical Writer may assist in preparing materials for technical seminars and business forums, and may be called upon to support technical or business presentations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Writes, rewrites and/or edits technical documents such as technical procedure manuals, user manuals, programming manuals, service manuals, operational specifications, and related technical publications.
  • Acquires subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, and referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals.
  • Oversees preparation of illustrative materials, selecting drawings, sketches, diagrams and charts.
  • Conducts quality review of materials.
  • Translates complex data into user-friendly text for print and electronic publications, such as technical journals, user and training manuals, government proposals, websites and podcasts.
  • Gathers information through research, statistical reports and interviews with technical staff.
  • Develops cataloging systems, and maintains records, files, electronic media and archiving of information for publications.
  • Assists in preparing material for technical seminars and business forums.
  • Selects or recommends use of layouts, graphics, drawings, tables, exhibits, illustrations, charts, or storyboards to amplify or clarify publications objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 2 - 5 years of experience (or commensurate experience).
  • 2+ years of experience required.
  • US Citizenship and ability to attain Public Suitability (active suitability is a plus).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Good decision-making and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work.
  • Understanding of Agile and DevOps framework (desired).

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Suitability/Public Trust clearance.
