About the position

This position is for a Technical Writer who operates under minimal supervision and works more independently within the Technical Publications department. Each writer is assigned to specific product platforms, and as projects are determined within their platforms, the writer collaborates with their project team, which includes Engineering, Regulatory Compliance, Product Management, Technical Support, and Applications Engineering, to plan the publication deliverables that are affected. The writer is expected to manage their project plans, deliverables, and schedules effectively. Each platform has a secondary writer assigned as the peer reviewer, and all writers are involved in the decisions regarding style usage and department procedures. The role assumes responsibility for managing the project schedule and reporting the project status for information products in which they are also the original author. The Technical Writer will research, outline, write, and illustrate new or existing information products for their assigned documents according to the project plan. This includes creating information products such as application manuals, installation guides, programming instructions, operational procedures, troubleshooting tips, service topics, installation sheets, online help systems, and internet-ready information products and systems. The Technical Writer must follow written department procedures to revise existing information products, create parts of new information products, or develop entirely new information products. They will research, write, illustrate, edit, and proofread information products within the schedules provided by the project teams. The writer will utilize marketing or engineering specifications and other source materials, as well as conduct interviews with engineers and other internal sources to gather the necessary information for their documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage project schedules and report project status for information products.
  • Research, outline, write, and illustrate new or existing information products according to project plans.
  • Create various information products including application manuals, installation guides, programming instructions, operational procedures, troubleshooting manuals, and online help systems.
  • Revise existing information products and create new ones following department procedures.
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure timely delivery of documentation.
  • Utilize marketing or engineering specifications and conduct interviews with engineers to gather necessary information.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Technical Writing, Technical Communications, Engineering, or English with 5+ years of experience in Domain and/or product expertise OR a Bachelor Degree in the same fields with 2+ years of experience.
  • Strong understanding of technical writing principles and practices.
  • Ability to manage project plans, deliverables, and schedules effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced knowledge of electronics and computer programming concepts.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, CorelDraw, Adobe Acrobat, and RoboHelp Office or equivalent tools.
  • Demonstrated advanced writing skills with correct grammar, syntax, and punctuation.
  • Strong interviewing skills for effective information-gathering meetings with subject matter experts.
