About the position

A Technical Writer job in Greensboro, NC, is currently accepting applications. This is a contract (to possible hire) position with our key aerospace client. In this role, you will prepare customer manuals and supplements, internal manuals and supplements, and other technical documentation in accordance with FAA, customer, and standards of quality. The position requires a strong understanding of technical writing concepts and the ability to produce high-quality documentation that meets regulatory and customer requirements. The Technical Writer will be responsible for researching and reviewing engineering drawings, engineering orders, and related technical data that define aircraft modification and assembly/subassembly/component specifications. This involves determining the effect on customer technical publications and using the materials to produce accurate, high-quality customer technical publications. You will also produce in-house technical publications such as manuals, forms, standard operating procedures, and maintain the wiki. In addition to documentation tasks, the Technical Writer will provide support to other internal departments regarding in-house forms, guides, intranet sites, and manuals. This role requires interfacing and coordinating in a professional manner with other departments and internal customers to ensure that customer, regulatory, and organizational requirements are met. Continuous improvement of the Technical Publications department, including procedures, quality control, workflow, and tools, is also a key responsibility. The ideal candidate will display self-leadership by volunteering for training on unfamiliar assignments and will contribute to multiple technical publication types among CMMs, ICAs, and in-house documentation. Familiarity with illustration requirements and structured FrameMaker (FM) is essential, as well as developing expertise in technical documentation methods and procedures used within the organization. A strong understanding of policies and procedures is also necessary for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Research and review engineering drawings, engineering orders, and related technical data defining aircraft modification and assembly/subassembly/component specifications.
  • Produce in-house technical publications such as manuals, forms, standard operating procedures, and the wiki.
  • Provide support to other internal departments regarding in-house forms, guides, intranet sites, and manuals.
  • Interface and coordinate in a professional manner with other departments and internal customers to ensure customer, regulatory, and organizational requirements are met.
  • Assist with continuous improvement of the Technical Publications department, including procedures, quality control, workflow, and tools.
  • Display self-leadership by volunteering for training on unfamiliar assignments.
  • Contribute to multiple technical publication types among CMMs, ICAs, and in-house documentation.
  • Work on complex documentation tasks with assistance.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with illustration requirements and structured FrameMaker (FM).
  • Develop expertise in technical documentation methods and procedures used.
  • Develop a strong understanding of policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Associates degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Windows environment, Internet browser, Email.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written engineering, engineering drawings, and other technical data.
  • Good interpersonal skills with a strong desire to work in a team.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Good oral, written, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluent in English - read, write, speak, and understand.
  • Knowledge of technical writing concepts, practices, and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous technical writing experience documenting modifications to transport category aircraft and/or manufacture of transport category aircraft assemblies, subassemblies, and/or components.
  • Familiarity with aircraft technical manuals such as Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM), Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC), Wiring Diagram Manual (WDM), Component Maintenance Manual (CMM), etc. and the ATA iSpec 2200 format.
  • Basic knowledge of FAA regulations, specifications, and related requirements.
  • Knowledge of Simplified Technical English.
  • Aircraft-related technical illustration experience.
  • Must be available for overtime and/or to work a flexible schedule, as job requirements dictate.
  • Computer skills: FrameMaker, Content Management System, Acrobat Pro, Azure DevOps, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, XML, HTML.
