About the position

Alstom is seeking a Technical Writer for its Baltimore, Maryland facility. This role is pivotal in preparing, reviewing, revising, and maintaining a variety of technical documents, including MARC Standard Documents and internal process documents. The Technical Writer will gather and analyze technical information from various sources, such as Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), to document new or changing repair, testing, safety, or internal business processes. The position requires writing, formatting, editing, reviewing, and proofreading procedural and technical information tailored for both technical and non-technical users. Additionally, the Technical Writer will create new document types as needed, develop test and repair procedures, and confirm their validity in the field. The role also involves creating training materials and presentations, maintaining a library of documentation, and ensuring that all documents are distributed to the appropriate departments and personnel as they are created or revised. The ideal candidate will have experience in creating documentation for audiences with varying levels of technical skill. Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to create infographics such as diagrams, screenshots, workflows, and graphs. A strong technical aptitude is necessary, as is the ability to work quickly and efficiently while multitasking with minimal supervision. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Outlook is required, along with experience in image and photo editing software. The Technical Writer will also need to present technical information effectively in live settings, such as classroom training or video conferences, and must be aware of and comply with industry safety standards, rules, and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, revise, and maintain technical documents, including MARC Standard Documents and internal process documents.
  • Gather and analyze technical information from various sources (OEM, SME, etc.) to document new or changing repair, testing, safety, or internal business processes.
  • Write, format, edit, review, and proof procedural and technical information for technical and non-technical users.
  • Create new document types when needed.
  • Develop test and repair procedures and confirm validity in the field.
  • Create training materials and presentations when needed.
  • Maintain a library of documentation, cataloging it for internal and/or external use.
  • Publish and maintain templates for written documentation.
  • Ensure all documents are distributed as they are created and/or revised to appropriate departments/personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or a minimum of three (3) years relevant experience in Technical Publications, Training, or other related field.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience with Maximo and GSI is preferred.
  • Detailed understanding of Technical Publications processes and technologies is preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and English communication skills (spoken and written).
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience creating infographics such as diagrams, screenshots, workflows, graphs, etc.
  • Experience in presenting technical information in a live setting, such as classroom training, presentations, or video conference.
  • Strong experience with MS Word, SharePoint, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience with image and photo editing software.
