About the position

The Technical Writer position involves collaborating with a team to create and validate technical documentation for Navy customers and sailors. The role is crucial for ensuring that front-line decision makers have access to accurate and clear documentation about the systems used in defense and national security. The Technical Writer will produce high-quality materials and develop the necessary infrastructure and tools for maintaining documentation across the product range.

Responsibilities

  • Create technical procedures, user guides, release notes, troubleshooting guides, and descriptive documentation.
  • Work closely with engineering, product, and business teams throughout all phases of product development, including design, development, testing, and operation.
  • Ensure that customers have access to the right documentation at every stage.
  • Generate, review, and edit documentation that is user-focused and of the highest quality.
  • Contribute to technical writing tools, including style guides and the documentation lifecycle and review process.
  • Work with Engineering to deliver accurate and compliant documentation that informs and instructs, providing a straightforward user experience.

Requirements

  • Must be US Citizen due to government requirement.
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance (active clearance is preferred).
  • Bachelor's degree in a related specialized area or field, or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated excellence generating technical documentation for an informed audience.
  • Solid understanding of DoD MIL standards and style guides and the ability to adhere to and implement such standards to technical documentation.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and PDF file type formats.
  • Understanding and demonstrated practice of documentation revision/version control.
  • Experience reading and interpreting software and hardware user documentation, complex technical products, and highly structured certification processes.
  • Experience working in digital collaboration environments such as Teams and SharePoint. Prior use of document automation platforms, for example, PandaDoc, would be a benefit.
  • Basic development proficiency - ability to apply technical best practices to documentation systems.
  • Demonstrated passion for excellent documentation and user experiences.
  • Clear and persuasive writing and in-person communication skills, for a variety of audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with document automation platforms such as PandaDoc.
