About the position

The Technical Writer position at Canvas involves creating and managing technical documentation for various equipment and systems, ensuring clarity and accuracy in communication. The role requires collaboration with different stakeholders to articulate agency policies and technical aspects of programs, while adhering to agency style and publication requirements. The writer will utilize desktop publishing tools to draft, edit, and layout materials, and will oversee the publication process from conception to distribution.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical writers with competencies to apply writing skills and knowledge of specialized vocabulary.
  • Develop specifications showing characteristics and capabilities of equipment and systems.
  • Articulate agency policies and explain technical aspects of agency programs.
  • Ensure materials are consistent with agency policy and meet style requirements.
  • Use desktop publishing hardware to draft, edit, and layout material.
  • Manage individual or serial publications from conception to distribution.
  • Review proposed publications for style, design, layout, and editorial aspects before release.
  • Prepare original papers, articles, or reports based on research and interviews.
  • Create manuals for training or guidance on technical equipment and systems.
  • Write clear and concise policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline with 3 years of work experience.
  • Technical writing experience within the DoD relative to information and/or business systems environment.
  • Excellent writing skills and strong command of the English language, including grammar.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well with other organizations and personnel with disparate backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with desktop publishing software.
  • Familiarity with scientific and technical writing standards.
  • Experience in creating user documentation for technical equipment.
