About the position

Planned Systems International, LLC (PSI) is seeking a skilled Technical Writer to support our Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Information and Technology (OIT) customer. The environment is dynamic, and the client needs are often evolving, making flexibility and forward-thinking views essential for success. This position is on-site in Washington, DC, and involves a variety of responsibilities that require a deep understanding of technical communication and the ability to distill complex topics into plain language for diverse audiences. The Technical Writer will conduct research for various initiatives and provide relevant content for stakeholders, including the CIO, CTO, and engineering teams across the IT organization. The role requires creating strategic UX copy that is compelling, easy to understand, and concise. Collaboration with executive teams and IT groups is crucial to establish a framework and process for continuously improving and testing new content. The writer will also repurpose content for different audiences and perform quality control to ensure accuracy and clarity. In addition to translating complex data into user-friendly text for print and electronic publications, the Technical Writer will select or recommend layouts, graphics, and other visual elements to enhance publication objectives. Editing narrative and graphic products to correct errors and logical inconsistencies is a key responsibility, as is establishing processes for knowledge sharing across the organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in technical writing, editing, and the ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and engaging manner.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research for initiatives and provide relevant content for stakeholders including the CIO, CTO, and engineering teams.
  • Distill complex topics into plain language for a variety of audiences/stakeholders.
  • Create strategic UX copy across various platforms that is compelling, easy to understand, and concise.
  • Collaborate with executive teams and IT groups to create a framework and process for continuously improving and testing new content.
  • Repurpose content for a variety of audiences/stakeholders and uses.
  • Perform quality control of content.
  • Translate complex data into user-friendly text for print and electronic publications.
  • Select or recommend use of layouts, graphics, drawings, tables, exhibits, illustrations, charts, or storyboards to amplify or clarify publication objectives.
  • Edit narrative and graphic products to identify and correct grammatical formatting and logic errors.
  • Establish processes and materials to build knowledge sharing based on how information flows from products/product line managers and across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (8 years of additional relevant experience may be substituted for education).
  • 10 years related experience required.
  • Experience supporting large, complex federal agencies; ideally VA or DoD.
  • Ability to interact and engage with Executive-level stakeholders.
  • Experience in editing narrative and graphic products to identify and correct grammatical formatting and logic errors.
  • Experience in the application of a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and scheduling tools.
  • Experience in meeting with authors and other team representatives to review documents, compile inputs/corrections, resolve incompatible comments, and provide final publishable documentation.
  • Experience in explaining in simple language scientific and technical ideas that are difficult for the average reader to understand.
  • Demonstrated ability to distill complex research into short, compelling narratives.
  • Proficiency in Confluence and HTML.
  • Proven experience in creating, editing, or improving briefings and visual materials (charts, graphs, PowerPoint presentations, informational graphics).
  • Advanced writing and editing skills.
  • A firm grasp of the challenges of communicating in various channels available today.
  • Flexibility, ingenuity, creativity, diplomacy, and a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams, or other editing and GUI editing software.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier II Moderate Risk Background Investigation.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
