About the position

The General Maintenance Technician at Western Kentucky University (WKU) plays a crucial role in maintaining and repairing campus buildings. This position involves working collaboratively with a multi-functional team to ensure the upkeep of HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical systems. The technician is responsible for performing skilled maintenance tasks, ensuring that facilities remain in optimal condition, and promoting safe work practices across the campus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general plumbing repairs including installing and maintaining valves, faucets, and other fixtures.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance on building interiors, such as changing lamps and laying floor tiles.
  • Execute general carpentry work on buildings, roofs, doors, and windows.
  • Utilize various hand and power tools for repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on building systems like air handling units and exhaust fans.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine corrective actions using blueprints and manuals.
  • Assemble, install, or repair electrical components and plumbing systems.
  • Inspect and maintain drives, motors, and belts, ensuring fluid levels and filters are checked.
  • Efficiently use the Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for maintenance tracking.
  • Maintain and repair facility furnishings and furniture.
  • Promote safe work practices within the team and across campus.
  • Operate University vehicles as needed.
  • Participate in emergency call-in rotation and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • At least five years of related work experience in a trade.
  • Valid Kentucky driver's license without serious violations.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including heavy lifting and various physical activities.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and ability to work near moving mechanical parts and hazardous materials.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic computer skills for data entry and email communication.
  • Experience with radio protocol.
  • Ability to read blueprints and technical manuals.
