About the position

The General Maintenance Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining and repairing various systems within campus buildings at Western Kentucky University. This position involves working collaboratively with a multi-functional team to ensure the efficient operation of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry systems. The technician is responsible for performing skilled maintenance tasks, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring a safe and functional environment for all campus facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general plumbing repairs including installing, maintaining, and repairing valves, faucets, and other sanitary fixtures.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance on building interiors, such as changing lamps and installing ceiling tiles.
  • Execute general carpentry work on buildings, roofs, stairways, and doors.
  • Utilize a variety of tools, including hand and power tools, to repair and maintain equipment.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on building systems like air handling units and pumps.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine corrective actions using blueprints and manuals.
  • Assemble, install, or repair electrical components and plumbing systems.
  • Inspect and maintain drives, motors, and belts, ensuring fluid levels and filters are checked regularly.
  • Efficiently use the Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to record maintenance work.
  • Promote safe work practices and maintain cleanliness at job sites.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • At least five years of related work experience in a trade.
  • Valid Kentucky driver's license without serious violations.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Mechanical and operational knowledge of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and communication.

  • Experience with radio protocol.
  • Familiarity with safety plans and risk assessment in maintenance work.
