About the position

The Technician, Histology II position at UMass Memorial Health Care involves performing complex histological procedures and tests, maintaining laboratory supplies, and ensuring quality control in the preparation of human tissue specimens for microscopic examination. This role is essential in supporting the dermatology department by preparing histopathologic slides and ensuring accurate and timely processing of specimens.

Responsibilities

• Follows established protocols to perform various procedures and tests, including complex ones for an assigned area.
• Establishes requirements for a working laboratory, acquiring and maintaining necessary supplies and equipment.
• Performs routine procedures and quality control, ensuring proper accessioning and logging of human tissue specimens.
• Prepares human tissue from surgical and diagnostic sources, performing specialized fixation and microscopic examination.
• Cleans, maintains, and calibrates laboratory equipment involved with surgical procedures.
• Performs routine maintenance on all instrumentation and attends continuing education sessions as required.
• Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
• Attends meetings, conferences, and seminars as required.
• Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
• Complies with health and safety regulations and requirements.
• Respects diverse views and contributes to a professional environment.
• Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
• Performs other similar and related duties as required.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of an accredited school of Histotechnology program.
• ASCP Certification eligible.
• 1 year of experience in an anatomic pathology laboratory.

Nice-to-haves

• Associates degree in a related field.
• ASCP certification as a HT, or be HT certified with 60 college credits in biology and chemistry.
