About the position

The Insulation / Painting Technician I position at Moseley Technical Services in Merritt Island, FL, is a contract role focused on supporting the aerospace and defense sectors. The technician will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include reviewing, editing, and following test procedures and processes, as well as operating test facilities and ground support equipment. This role requires collaboration with engineers on design concepts and facility improvements, ensuring that all work adheres to safety and quality standards. The technician will also be involved in the assembly of complex mechanical systems and will work with hazardous chemicals and high-pressure systems, emphasizing the importance of workplace safety and continuous improvement. In this position, the technician will apply thermal protection systems (TPS) onto New Glenn flight hardware, which involves surface preparation, fixturing, adhesive application, gap filling, and vacuum bagging of large structures. The role demands strict adherence to equipment requirements and operational methods in the fabrication of parts using various materials, including sealants, primers, RTV adhesives, solvents, and foam insulation. The technician will be expected to check completed products for conformance to specifications and defects, contributing to the overall safety, quality, and process improvement initiatives within the organization. The position requires the ability to support scheduled work shifts, including overtime and weekends when necessary. Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED and have at least 2 years of experience in aerospace thermal protection applications. The role also requires expertise in various application techniques and a strong understanding of safety procedures for chemical handling. The technician must be able to work cooperatively with diverse teams and demonstrate a strong work ethic with attention to detail. Basic computer skills and strong communication abilities are essential, along with the physical capability to perform tasks that may involve lifting heavy items and working in confined spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Review, edit, and follow test procedures and processes.
  • Operate test facility and ground support equipment.
  • Collaborate with engineers on design concepts and facility improvements.
  • Plan and execute assembly for complex mechanical systems.
  • Work with hazardous chemicals and high-pressure systems.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvements to promote workplace safety.
  • Apply thermal protection systems (TPS) onto New Glenn flight hardware.
  • Perform surface preparation, fixturing, adhesive application, gap filling, and vacuum bagging of large structures.
  • Adhere to equipment requirements, method, and sequences of operation in fabrication of parts using various materials.
  • Understand, follow, and complete work instructions, contributing to safety, quality, and process improvement.
  • Check completed products for conformance to specifications and for defects.
  • Support scheduled work shifts, overtime, and weekends if necessary.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of experience in aerospace thermal protection applications.
  • Expertise in primer/topcoat spray-out and hand application, spray/molded foam insulation applications, conversion coating applications, sealant applications, adhesive bonding, RTV bonding of TPS, ablative TPS materials, foam insulation applications, pressure sensitive adhesive applications, vacuum bagging, thermal blankets, applying sealants, conversion coatings, primers, adhesives, and other special finishes.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures for chemical handling.
  • Ability to be respirator qualified.
  • Ability to work respectfully and cooperatively with diverse teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong work ethic with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret engineering models, drawings, specifications, written work instructions, and test procedures.
  • Basic computer skills such as Windows, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to climb ladders/stairs and work in small, restricted areas.
  • Ability to perform repetitive work including lifting of heavy items, >50lbs.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2+ years of experience working with aerospace thermal protection systems or coatings.
  • Industry certification, trade school training, and/or degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated success as a 'hands-on' technical leader.
  • Experience in handling large aerospace components.
  • Experience in assembling large tight-tolerance structures.
  • Experience in new product introduction.
  • Experience in a team-based Lean Manufacturing environment.
  • Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma certification.
