About the position

The Technologist (Research Analyst 4) position at the Oregon Department of Justice is a mid-level role within the Civil Enforcement Division's Privacy and Data Security team. The primary purpose of this role is to support the Attorney General's enforcement efforts related to the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act, involving industry research, data analysis, and technical expertise. The position requires a blend of in-office and remote work, focusing on investigations and enforcement actions against violations of consumer privacy and data security laws.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct industry research projects on issues impacting consumer privacy.
  • Gather and interpret qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for management and attorneys.
  • Build appropriate investigative techniques and identify data sources for cases.
  • Analyze materials received from target businesses.
  • Assist in developing appropriate remedies for violations.
  • Prepare guidance on technical strategies for investigations or litigation.
  • Monitor technology markets and identify emerging technologies that could harm consumers.
  • Recommend potential policy or investigative approaches to management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in any discipline with six-quarter units in statistics or quantitative analysis methods and three years of experience in data analysis and report preparation, including two years coordinating complex projects.
  • Alternatively, five years of experience in data analysis and report preparation, including two years coordinating complex projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated interest in emerging technology and related policy issues.
  • Highly organized, self-directed, and resourceful.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with adaptability to shifting priorities.
  • Experience executing technology projects or services using expertise in software development, product management, data science, or research.
  • Experience utilizing data or research to identify issues or develop solutions.
  • Experience advising leaders on technical concepts to achieve objectives.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in software development or data science.
