About the position

The Technology Technical Assistant at SUNY Niagara is responsible for providing technical support in the maintenance, repair, and operation of machines and equipment within the Technology labs of the Business & STEM division. This role focuses on ensuring the functionality and safety of welding and machining equipment while assisting students and faculty with their technical needs. The assistant will manage laboratory spaces, oversee safety protocols, and handle inventory and purchasing, contributing to a dynamic academic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining and preparing all laboratory spaces, equipment, and materials for laboratory classes in Welding, Mechanical Technology, and Electronics.
  • Performing routine maintenance and repairs on welding machines, mechanical tools, and related equipment.
  • Assisting instructors and students with equipment setup and breakdown, troubleshooting, and usage during lab sessions.
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining safety protocols and procedures for technology laboratories and related facilities.
  • Conducting regular safety inspections and risk assessments of technology laboratories and equipment and addressing potential safety hazards or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Providing training and guidance to laboratory faculty, staff, and students on safe laboratory practices and use of equipment.
  • Collaborating with faculty to develop and implement equipment usage guidelines and safety protocols.
  • Maintaining an inventory of spare parts, tools, and consumables necessary for equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Coordinating with external vendors for specialized repairs or procurement of replacement parts.
  • Keeping accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, and service history.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of relevant regulations, guidelines, and best practices in welding technology and recommending updates or upgrades to equipment as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Welding Technology, Mechanical Technology, Engineering Science, or a Welding Certification.
  • Two years of experience in welding or mechanical maintenance.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing welding equipment, including MIG, TIG, and stick welders.
  • Familiarity with mechanical tools and equipment commonly used in welding and fabrication.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelors degree in Industrial Technology, Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience working in an academic or training setting.
  • Experience leading the training of others on welding best practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety protocols and regulations.
