About the position

The Technical Editor and Writer position at Northrop Grumman involves creating and editing technical documents, including operations and maintenance manuals, user manuals, and training documentation. The role requires strong technical writing skills, the ability to communicate complex information clearly, and a focus on end-user needs. The position is integral to ensuring that technical specifications and instructions are accessible to a diverse audience, contributing to the successful operation and maintenance of systems.

Responsibilities

  • Write, rewrite, and edit technical documents such as O-Level and D-Level operations and maintenance manuals, payload operator manuals, and software user manuals.
  • Acquire subject knowledge through interviews with product developers, engineers, and technicians, as well as observing system operations and researching technical specifications.
  • Conduct peer reviews of program documents and coordinate stakeholder reviews with Configuration Management (CM).
  • Create original illustrations for manuals and ensure accuracy and consistency in technical information and documentation layout.
  • Manage all phases of document generation, including researching, writing, incorporating updates, and delivering documents via CM.
  • Focus on end-user needs to ensure safe job performance and equipment protection.

Requirements

  • 2 years relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree; 0 years with a Master's; 4 years with an Associate degree for Technical Writer and Editor.
  • 5 years relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree; 3 years with a Master's; 7 years with an Associate degree for Principal Technical Writer and Editor.
  • Solid technical writing background with emphasis on hardware maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe PhotoShop, and Acrobat Pro.
  • Must have active/current Secret Clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in a technical field.
  • Maintenance Technician experience in electronic systems operation and maintenance.
  • Experience with the generation of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals and military standards governing SGML and XML development.
  • Experience with the generation of Illustrated Parts Breakdown manuals.
  • Understanding of Configuration Management processes and experience with creating software user manuals and test cases.
  • Experience with training development and tools like ClearQuest, Microsoft Visio, Adobe Illustrator, Snag-It, and/or Subversion (SVN).
