About the position

The Telecommunication Support Specialist I/II position at Wright State University involves a range of responsibilities related to the installation and maintenance of low-voltage communications cabling and systems. The role is divided into two levels: Specialist I and Specialist II, each with distinct responsibilities and qualifications. As a Specialist I, the individual will work under general direction, utilizing independent judgment to perform various tasks associated with low-voltage communications cabling. This includes the installation and termination of different types of cabling, ensuring compliance with established codes and standards. The Specialist I will also be responsible for testing installations to meet minimum transmission line standards, managing job tickets for billing and inventory, and assisting with the installation of network hardware and access control systems. The Specialist II role encompasses all the responsibilities of the Specialist I but adds more advanced tasks such as supporting the design and implementation of network topologies, performing fiber optic terminations and splices, and providing high-level troubleshooting for complex network issues. This position also includes mentoring junior team members and ensuring that installations adhere to local and NEC code requirements as well as BICSI standards. Both positions require excellent communication skills and the ability to work in various conditions, including the potential for evening and weekend work. Physical demands include lifting equipment and climbing ladders, making it essential for candidates to be physically capable of performing these tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Installation and termination of various types of low-voltage communications cabling, ensuring compliance with codes and standards.
  • Testing installations to meet minimum established transmission line standards and characteristics.
  • Completing job tickets for proper billing and cable inventory management.
  • Assisting with the installation of wired and wireless network hardware, access control system components, and security cameras.
  • Completing assigned MAC (move, add, change) orders and trouble calls/tickets for customers, including testing and verification, repairs, or replacement of faulty equipment.
  • Providing high-level troubleshooting and technical support for access control and IP surveillance systems.
  • Mentoring junior team members and sharing knowledge and best practices.

Requirements

  • For Specialist I: A high school diploma or GED and six years of related work experience, or two years of post-secondary education and four years of related work experience.
  • For Specialist II: A high school diploma or GED and seven years of related work experience, or two years of post-secondary education and five years of related work experience.
  • Experience with fiber optic, voice, and data cable installation, maintenance, and record keeping in a commercial environment.
  • Understanding of local and NEC code requirements regarding cabling infrastructure installation.
  • Knowledge of BICSI installation standards and best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Valid United States driver's license for at least one year.
