About the position

The Telecommunications and Network Support Specialist at Genesee Community College is responsible for supporting the operation and maintenance of the telecommunications distribution system and associated hardware that facilitate voice, data, and video communications. This role involves installation, maintenance, and monitoring of network hardware and software, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and providing tier 2/3 support for various telecommunications systems. The specialist will also collaborate with IT staff and college stakeholders to enhance the college's telecommunications infrastructure and support the overall mission of the institution.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily operations and maintenance of information networks including voice, data, video, cable, cellular, and wireless systems.
  • Assist in ensuring that the Telecommunications Distribution System (TDS) meets applicable codes and follows industry best practices.
  • Support college life safety systems infrastructure and daily operations including intercom and mass notification systems.
  • Monitor all telecommunication systems via on-site and off-premises modalities including logging, alerts, and auditing.
  • Respond to telecommunications trouble tickets in accordance with agreed service response times.
  • Serve on project teams requiring telecommunications and networks expertise to complete projects within scope and on time.
  • Interact with vendors and colleagues to evaluate product offerings and acquire technical assistance as required.
  • Explore and support new services and technologies for the college community in consultation with relevant departments.
  • Use the IT Service Management (ITSM) system for resolving network-related incidents and service requests.
  • Participate in the annual review of telecommunications and networks infrastructure and make recommendations for improvements.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Computer Systems and Network Technologies or related field; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • A minimum of two years' experience with voice (TDM and VoIP), data, video, cable, cellular, and wireless systems.
  • Good written, oral, and organizational skills; demonstrated customer service orientation.
  • Ability to function at a high level in a fast-paced environment and collaborate with multiple departments.
  • Proficiency using the Microsoft 365 suite of products.
