About the position
The Meter Reader position at NiSource involves accurately reading gas and electric meters, recording consumption, and maintaining assigned meter books. The role requires interaction with customers and reporting any irregularities or hazards. Successful candidates will undergo training and must complete aptitude tests unless already qualified.
Responsibilities
- Accurately read gas and electric meters and reset demand indicating hands.
- Record meter readings, compute consumption, and leave self-reading cards when required.
- Maintain meter reading sheets in assigned meter books in proper account number sequence.
- Engage with customers and refer complaints or inquiries to the department supervisor.
- Record special hazards on meter reading sheets for future reference.
- Report gas leaks to the service department immediately.
- Report unusual conditions needing attention, such as illegal connections or broken meter glass.
- Make special trips to reread meters and obtain missed readings.
- Prepare departmental reports as required.
- Operate company or private vehicle to transport meter readers.
- Take care of company tools and equipment assigned during working hours.
- Keep assigned equipment work areas clean and orderly.
- Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
- Direct and instruct employees assigned to work with him.
- Assist in training other employees.
- Perform similar or less skilled work as required.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to write figures legibly.
