About the position

The Temporary Biological Sciences Research Technician 2 position at Oregon State University is responsible for conducting field botany methods and leading a field crew in data collection tasks related to vegetation monitoring studies in eastern Oregon's dry forest types. The role involves ensuring adherence to university policies, managing data, and collaborating with various stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of forest restoration treatments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead field crew in data collection efforts, including forest understory vegetation measurements.
  • Compile and enter collected data into a database, ensuring quality control.
  • Communicate with project sponsors in the absence of the supervisor or Principal Investigator.
  • Arrange and provide daily transportation for the crew to field sites.
  • Provide leadership and direction to field crew, ensuring adherence to data collection protocols and university policies.

Requirements

  • Two years of college-level courses in biological science and one year of related experience at the Biological Research Technician 1 level, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in data entry, quality control, and management of digital data.
  • Knowledge of field botany techniques, including vegetation cover assessments using quadrats and transects.
  • Experience identifying grass species and knowledge of semi-arid forest ecosystems.
  • Demonstrated strong teamwork and leadership skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's or bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Experience identifying native and invasive grasses of eastern Oregon.
  • Knowledge of and experience with flora of eastern Oregon.
